Website or Facebook Page: What Does Your Small Business Actually Need?

18 July 2026 · 3 min read

"We already have a Facebook page — do we really need a website?" It is the most common question we hear from businesses in Malta, and the honest answer is: it depends on where your next customers come from.

What a Facebook page is great at

Let us be fair to Facebook. For a local business it does real work:

  • It keeps your existing regulars updated.
  • It is free and quick to post to.
  • It shows a bit of personality and social proof.

If all your customers already follow you and come back on their own, a Facebook page covers a lot. The problem is what it cannot do.

Where a Facebook page quietly loses you customers

Think about how people actually find a business today. Someone new to the area, or a tourist, or a local who needs a plumber tonight, does not scroll Facebook hoping to stumble on you. They Google you. And here is what happens:

  • They search "best pizza near me", "electrician Sliema", or your business name — and Facebook pages rarely rank well for those searches.
  • If they do find your page, they often hit "no website listed," an outdated menu, or a post from eight months ago.
  • Many people, especially older or higher-spending customers, simply trust a business with a proper website more.

Every one of those moments is a customer deciding between you and a competitor — and a missing or weak online presence quietly sends them elsewhere.

The test: where does your next customer come from?

Answer this honestly:

  • If your growth comes almost entirely from regulars and word of mouth, a Facebook page plus a Google Business Profile might be enough for now.
  • If you want new people to find you — tourists, searchers, people comparing options at 9pm — you need to show up on Google, and that means a website. Here is how getting found on Google actually works.

Most businesses that come to us think they are in the first group and discover they are firmly in the second. There is a whole category of customer they never see: the person who searched, found nothing convincing, and booked someone else.

You do not have to choose

The best setup is not website or Facebook — it is both, working together:

  • A website as your home base: found on Google, always up to date, and built to turn a visitor into a call or booking. (Here is what makes a good one.)
  • Your Facebook and Instagram linked in, so your latest posts show up automatically and your regulars stay close.

That way you keep everything Facebook does well and stop losing the customers it can never reach.

The easy way to find out

You do not have to guess. Search your own business on Google the way a stranger would — "[your type] near me" or your town plus your trade — and see what a potential customer sees. If it is a competitor's polished site above a bare Facebook link, you have your answer.
